Kalindikhal Trek Expedition Overview

The Kalindikhal Trek offers a challenging journey across a high-altitude Himalayan mountain pass. Explorers will be surrounded by spectacular views throughout the trek, creating memories of a lifetime within a very remote and sacred region.

Witness the Tapovan meadows and explore gurgling streams while taking in famous Himalayan peaks. The Kalindikhal Trek provides explorers with great campsites at the base of Shivling Peak (6,543 meters), known as the Matterhorm of Garhwal. Trekkers will see the source of the sacred river Ganges at Gaumukh. Hike halfway around Garhwal in the Bhagirathi Valley, trek through Nandanvan, which is at the base of the Bhagirathi peaks, and see unparalleled views of mountain peaks as you travel towards the Alaknanda valley.

After a period of time spent acclimating to the high-altitudes, explorers can hike up to Vasukital Lake, a campsite that is surrounded by gorgeous snow-capped mountains. Then, you will trek across the Sweta Glacier and begin crossing the Kalindikhal Pass, which is a challenging experience that leads to incredible views of the mountain ranges. Afterward, explorers will descend into Arwatal and Mana, which is the last village on the Chinese border. End your adventure with a visit to a holy temple in Badrinath.

Best Time to Trek Kalindikhal

The best time to attempt the Kalindikhal Trek is between the summer and monsoon season, which are from mid-June to September.

Summer Weather:

The weather along the trail is very comfortable and temperate during the summer months. The Himalayan mountains are visible and the cool breezes add to the palatable environment.

Monsoon Season:

Unlike other treks, the monsoon season enhances the beauty of the Kalindikhal Trek. The meadows and forests are lush and green, while the colorful flowers grow with abundance. During the monsoon season, the weather is generally moderate and lovely.

Kalindi Khal Trek Itinerary :


Day 01 - Rishikesh to Uttarkashi

Trekking/travel time: 5-6 hours, 170 kms
After an early breakfast, explorers will travel to Uttarkashi. Upon arrival, they will check into the hotel and eat lunch. Afterwards, they’ll visit the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and Museum. Spend the night at the hotel.

Day 02 - Uttarkashi

The day will be spent performing medical testing, permit verification and visiting the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). Explorers will spend the night at the hotel.

Day 03 - Uttarkashi to Gangotri (3048m)

Trekking/travel time: 4-5 hours, 100 kms
After breakfast, explorers will drive to Gangotri via the Harsil route. Then, they will check into a local hotel and spend the night there.

Day 04 - Gangotri to Bhojwassa (3792m)

Trekking/travel time: 5-6 hours, 14 kms
Today, explorers will meet the trekking crew and begin their first trek day hiking to Bhojwassa. The trail winds along the Bhagirathi river. Set up camp and spend the night in Bhojwassa.

Day 05 - Bhojwassa to Gomukh (3890m) to Tapovan (4463m)

After an early start, explorers will see the Bhagirathi peaks before traveling to Gomukh, which is the origin point of the sacred Ganges. From here, we will ascend to Tapovan. Camp at Tapovan and enjoy a delicious dinner here.

Day 06 - Tapovan to Nandanvan

Trekking/travel time: 4-5 hours
Explorers will trek to Nandanvan and enjoy dinner and camping here.

Day 07 - Nandanvan to Vasuki Tal (4880m)

Trekking/travel time: 4-5 hours, 6 km
Travel along the Chaturangi Glacier in an attempt to reach Vasuki Tal, a high-altitude lake at the base of Mt. Satopanth and Mt. Vasuki Parbat. It’s a steady ascend to the top. Camp here overnight in tents.

Day 08 - Vasuki Tal to Khara Pathar (Suralya Bamak) (5480m)

Trekking/travel time: 3-4 hours, 6 km
After a nutritious breakfast, begin traveling up to Khara Pathar with a packed lunch. Set up camp on Moraine and enjoy dinner here.

Day 09 - Khara Pathar to Sweta Glacier (5500m)

Trekking/travel time: 4-5 hours, 8 km
After breakfast, hike up to Sweta Glacier, eat dinner here and camp overnight.

Day 10 - Sweta Glacier to Kalindikhal Base Camp

Early in the morning, begin the journey to Kalindikhal Base Camp. Stay overnight in tents.

Day 11 - Kalindikhal Base Campe to Kalindi Peak

Today, explorers will travel to the Kalindi Peak summit and stay overnight in tents here.

Day 12 - Kalindikhal to Raja Parav (4910m)

Trekking/travel time: 6-7 hours, 12 km
Hike to the Kalindi Pass and enjoy some time spent soaking up the views. Trek down to Raja Parav for dinner and camp overnight.

Day 13 - Raja Parav to Arwa Tal (3910m)

Trek 13 kilometers to Arwa Tal, where you will stay overnight in tents.

Day 14 - Arwa Tal to Ghastoli (3796m)

Trekking/travel time: 5-6 hours, 16 km
Travel towards Ghastoli and stay overnight here.

Day 15 - Ghastoli to Mana to Badrinath (3096m)

Today, explorers will travel down to Badrinath, which is located along the Alaknanda River. After a 7-hour hike, you’ll find yourself in the village of Mana, which is the last village on the Indian border. After lunch, you’ll be driven down to Badrinath and check into a hotel there. In the afternoon, explorers will have the chance to visit a local temple. Enjoy dinner at the hotel and stay overnight.

Day 16 - Badrinath to Rishikesh

After a delicious breakfast, explorers will begin the 290-kilometer drive to Rishikesh. Here, they will check into a local hotel. In the evening, they will have the opportunity to visit Laxman Jhula, a thirteen-storied temple, Geeta Ashram, Parmarth Niketan and experience the Aarti ceremony held at Triveni Ghat. After an exciting day, adventurers will return to the hotel and spend the final night there.
